3-Minute Guide On IUI: Explain IUI, its procedure, after-care, and risk?

IUI Treatment

IUI procedure means motile sperm should be transferred (actively) from the cervix and then goes to the uterus. IUI treatment in Ludhiana is known for improving the chances of infertile couples with trouble conceiving independently. The IUI procedure is best when performed during ovualtion to increase success rate.

Reason to perform IUI

When you visit the IVF Centre in Ludhiana, you might be suggested to undergo IUI. It’s all about your present situation and telling you what works best for you. Some of the major reasons to perform IUI are:

  • Not able to conceive as the woman has been on medications to boost ovulation. You should consult the doctor on which approach is right for you.
  • Cervical factor
  • Minimal – mild endometriosis
  • Advancing maternal age
  • Male ejaculatory dysfunction
  • Mild to moderately abnormal semen parameters
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Use of frozen sperm
  • Use of donor sperm

Steps to perform IUI procedure

During the IUI procedure, a thin, flexible catheter will be passed through cervix, and sperm is injected to uterus. The insertion happens with the speculum and catheter. IUI treatment takes only a few minutes, and it’s a fairly simple process.

Ideal time to perform an IUI

IUI happens during ovulation. The right timing depends on hCG injection, which happens within 24 to 48 hours. If you need to get 2 IUI, a gap period of 24 hours is necessary.

Procedure of sperm collection for IUI

You need to collect the sperm sample in a sterile solution through ejaculation. If you have collected a semen sample at home, then make sure to deliver it within a half-hour of ejaculation. The total time depends on the washing technique, which accounts for 30 minutes to 2 hours. In most cases, washing happens once the sperm sample is collected.

Please Note!

Following IUI, you must lay down for 30 minutes and continue doing your work.

Length time of washed sperm

Per the present stats, the sperm can live for 24 to 72 hours. Although, there’s a possibility sperm keeps on swimming beyond the tubes, which makes it only live for around 6 to 12 hours. Ideally, sperm can live for five days. The procedure of IUI gives the infertile couple improved chances of conception.

FAQs

  • Should males abstain from sexual intercourse before IUI?

YES! And that should not be more than 72 hours since the last ejaculation. The proper planning and doing everything specifically won’t affect male sperm’s shape and motility. Although, if there are no male sperm problems, wait for at least 24 hours to improve overall well-being.

  • How much time should I wait to have intercourse after IUI?

In most cases, intercourse is possible anytime after IUI. The experienced fertility doctor suggests waiting for 48 hours and returning to sexual intercourse.
